Example Skull Base Carcinoma (Dr. Helenowski Experience)

This patient had a skull base carcinoma (cancer) removed with surgery. Radiation and chemotherapy were used to treat remaining tumor. Tumor progression was treated with Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, Peacock Radiosurgery, and Chemotherapy. After some time, there was a new tumor growth as shown in the MRI scan on the left side. From previous experience, it was felt that the lower part of the tumor could not be reached with Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. The Gamma ART 6000, however, was able to reach all parts of the tumor because of its larger work envelope.

Left Image - Tumor circled in red was growing. The patient was evaluated at two major University Centers in Chicago, one of which has a Gamma Knife and was told that nothing effective could be done to treat this progressing tumor.

Right Image - About two months after radiosurgery with the Gamma ART 6000, after a vacation in Europe, the patient had no side effects from the treatment and a follow up MRI scan showed the tumor to be greatly decreased in size.

This case is presented as an example only of what has been achieved with radiosurgery by Dr. Helenowski. Each case is different and there are no guarantees that patients with similar appearing tumors will have exactly the same response even if treated the same.
